No reproduction without written permission from the publisher. Chapter Two: Using Classroom Conversations to Guide Change belong in a category called free voluntary reading (FVR). FVR is a term used by researcher Stephen Krashen that means “reading what you want to read, with no book reports, no questions at the end of a chapter, and not having to finish the book if you don’t want to” (Pilgreen 2000).

Although we have had some trial-and-error periods and we continue to reflect on what works best, we now have what we consider a strong schoolwide reading program. We still, however, need MORE books! Every student and staff member at our school participates in SSL class. It is third period every day, and lasts for twenty minutes. Three days a week are devoted to (silent sustained) reading, one day a week is a writing day, and one day a week is a read-aloud day. These three elements are crucial in creating a balanced literacy program.

I decided to apply the same elements of a balanced literacy approach to my reading period that I already had in my weekly schedule, by making some significant changes to our SSR time. Instead of having sustained silent reading for five consecutive days each week, we would also add writing and reading aloud to our schedule. Are They Really Reading?
