Four years later, the Russians established a trading post 60 miles up from the Yukon’s mouth, on St. Michael Island. The following morning, a group of Indians appeared at the hut, and identified themselves as Nehannis Indians. Campbell conversed with them, attempting to convince the Natives to trade with the Hudson’s Bay Company men, but the Nehannis were intimidated by the Chilkoots, who lived just 12 miles downriver.
