Ideational meanings: processes, participants and circumstances Ideational meanings are realized by the grammatical structures of the transitivity system involving Participants, Processes and Circumstances of various kinds. Primary school children who had very little prior systematic knowledge of grammar were able to use functional descriptions of Process types, Participant and Circumstances, to see how different examples encode a variety of meanings relevant to the representation of character in Anthony Browne’s Piggyback (1986).

The idea of using online games to entice readers is not confined to authors of children’s books. The newspaper Sydney Morning Herald carried a story by Alan Mascarenhas in its weekend edition for July 17–18, 2004, about author Bruno Bouchet who designed an online game to sell his book, French Letters, a satire on the phenomenon of the fabled ‘sea change’—specifically baby boomers who descend on villages in the South of France to sort out their mid-life crises. As online games become more commonly used to attract young readers to books, classroom activities involving children in rating their effectiveness for this purpose could also be undertaken in a similar manner to that suggested for rating teaser chapters.
