Then state what is actually true. Develop the statement about what is actually true with details from your own and your friends’ experiences. Tell how the heart is like a pump, how friendship is like a garden, or how the brain is like a computer.

Here is a paragraph, for example, that compares animal and plant cells to a shoe factory. It was written by Heather Gillingham-Rivas. Animal and plant cells and their many organelles are like a shoe factory. Inside every factory can be found the office of the operations manager containing the secured files, paper or digital, for all operations, including the secret instructions for the most fashionable and comfortable shoes possible. In a cell, all instructions for the processes of that specific cell can be found in the nucleus, a structure enclosed by a membrane that contains the genetic information that, when read and converted into a useable format, can create any part of the cell and organism to which it belongs.

We also grow by learning—by taking as our own the beliefs and actions what we admire in others. The role we play as teachers, though, differs from the role of learners. In usual circumstances, the teacher is more experienced, the learner less; the teacher more knowledgeable, the learner less; the teacher more confident, the learner less. Teaching and learning are both active pursuits. They differ in that teaching is the pursuit of giving and learning the pursuit of receiving. If we are truly whole, we are neither always one nor the other.
